Driver Operator / Fire Apparatus Operator (FAO) 2026 – 400 Free Practice Questions to Pass the Exam

The correct choice indicates that a hydrant with the largest capacity is typically connected to a primary feeder. Primary feeders are designed to convey substantial amounts of water across longer distances and serve as the main pipeline that distributes water from the source or treatment facility to the secondary feeders. Due to these characteristics, primary feeders maintain higher pressures and larger diameters, allowing them to deliver a greater volume of water.

In contrast, secondary feeders branch off from primary feeders and distribute water to local areas, which often results in lower capacity compared to primary feeders. Distribution feeders serve a specific local area and meet the demand of consumers but are not designed for high-capacity situations like fire flow demands. Local feeders are also focused on serving smaller subsections of the distribution system, supporting residential and commercial needs without the larger flow capacity required for firefighting purposes. Thus, when considering fire hydrants that are intended for high-capacity needs, especially during emergencies, the connection to a primary feeder is crucial for maintaining effective firefighting capabilities.
